America on Wheels 1939 Worlds Fair- promoted as the world of tomorrow cars were an escape from 10 years of depression Futurama- incorporates Le Courbousier into a view of future society (in the  1960's"  World War II was unsettling for the economy (see sugrue) even though there was a need to increase war production, the automobile  industry was booming Pearl harbor-> end of cars. all industry turned attention to war time productions to  create a mechanistic war  Detroit was the arsenal of democracy (willowrun michigan) run by Ford, building bomber planes created huge need for jobs, people worked till exhaustion to make  consumer economy evaporated as resources were limited for war efforts  After WWII ended, the US was the strongest Industrial nation in the world. industry boomed, jobs and money were available lead to huge demand for basic needs like cars and houses  Despite excitement of new cars, industry was still dominated by GM (cultural  explenation)  Alfred Sloan attacked model T in teh 1920's by emphasizing design and not  functionality Harley Earl- hired to design After WWII, Earl changed design to incorporate airplane shapes. LeSabre- social definition of the jet plane incorporated into cars- jet exhausts,
