Megan McGreal February 11, 2008 1 st Congressional District of Texas At, 8,916 square miles, the First Congressional District of Texas lives up to it’s status as the first district in America’s second largest state. Located in the upper eastern region of Texas, the First recently went through redistricting in 2003, changing it’s voting demographic from historically Democrat to Republican by adding more urban counties. With a median family income of over $30,000, and a majority of its citizens maintaining white collar jobs, small business lobbying and conservative ideologies helped Republican Louie Gohmert seize office in 2004, the first Republican win in the district since 1871. Since in office, Gohmert has made his position clear on the issue of abortion. He is opposed to abortion on both moral grounds and with governmental funding. Although the first Congressional District of Texas may be more moderate on a whole, it’s representation in congress is strongly conservative, with Gohmert not only opposing abortion, but cosponsoring numerous bills against family planning and women’s reproductive rights. Although the First Congressional District of Texas has voted Democratic almost its entire existence, a redistricting in 2003, which allotted it more urban land, pushed a Republican win in 2004. According to the 2000 census, the first Congressional District of Texas has 651,619 residents, but as I have previously mentioned, the redistricting in 2003 has added a larger urban population. The district is 71% non-Hispanic white, with an African American population of 18%, 1% Asian, and a shocking 9% Hispanic. I would have assumed that because it Texas borders Mexico, there would be a higher Hispanic population, but it is possible that because it’s
