Prior Knowledge “Pre-assessments are used before teaching to determine the level of understanding of each student. Information gathered is used by teachers during the lesson planning process.” (Schoenfeldt & Salsbury, p. 64, 2009). “Pretests, K-W-L charts, and brainstorming are a few methods of determining the prior knowledge students already possess of the topic.” (Schoenfeldt & Salsbury, p. 40, 2009). If the students are successful on the pre-assessment of knowledge activity, then the teacher does not have to complete a full lesson on the topic. They can just do a short review of the topic. If the students do not do well on the pre-assessment of knowledge activity, then the teacher will have to teach a full lesson. After the lesson, the teacher will have to retest the students making sure that they know and understand the information that was just taught to them.
