Mainly in small populations, the changes that occur in allele frequencies are called genetic drift. Genetic drift happens only by chance and is not something that can be predicted. The bottleneck effect and the founder effect are the two different types of genetic drift. In the late 1800’s the Elephant seal was hunted to near extinction. Only twenty animals were saved out of thousands. Biologists call this tremendous cutting of a population, a population bottleneck. When the population bottleneck happens, and there are only a few survivors of the population, a reduced genetic diversity is left. This reduced genetic diversity is called the bottleneck effect, and it means due to the reduced genetic diversity, a species of animals could

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
