Ecological services are the processes by which our environment produces natural resources. This is something that humans often take for granted. These services are benefits that derive from natural functions of an ecosystem. There are quite a lot of functions that the ecosystems do naturally that we do not even think about. Humans breathe in oxygen and then breathe out carbon dioxide, and trees “breathe” in carbon dioxide and then release the oxygen we need to survive. Butterflies and bees pollinate and in turn we get to see beautiful flowers. Some of the food that we eat had been pollinated by a bee or many other creatures of the ecosystem. Wetlands are a major part of our ecosystem, and they are slowly being diminished. They are among the most threatened. The plants and soils of the wetlands act as a natural filtration system. They store such a large amount of carbon dioxide, that if/when they are destroyed and the carbon is released into the atmosphere it will play a major role in the already terrible global warming. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
