Honestly, when I began reading the article I began racking my brain as to where this society could be, to the point that I decided to google the name, Nacirema. Once I didthat initial search and realized that Nacirema, is actually, American spelled backwards, everything began to “click” for me. The geographical location described by Miner depictsa territory that is located between Canada and Mexico, which of course is America. I believe that the author chose to do this to force readers look at a culture that they are veryfamiliar with to seem foreign and bizarre. It illustrates one of the many ironies of our society. Miner described many of the monotonous “rituals” that the Nacirema people indulge in on a regular and daily basis. As I read through the article initially, I thought that this society of people were barbaric, and their practices were outdated. In our society we do not typically schedule appointments with medicine men, with doctors, or holy-
