Astro 04: The Solar SystemChapter 12: "Rings, Moons & Pluto"Europa
Callistois the outermost ofGalilean moons at a distanceof 1.2 million miles. It is in synchronousrevolution around Jupiterevery 17 days. The moon has a heavilycratered surface that has seenlittle change over the last 4.4billion years.CALLISTO
Callisto froze solid before theprocess of differentiationoccurred. It is a geologicallydead world.CALLISTO

Ganymede is the largest moonin the Solar System.Parts of its surface are very oldlike Callisto but others arerelatively young, perhaps abillion years old.Ganymede may have a rocky, metallic core.Tidal forces may occasionallyheat the interior and cause waterto erupt and resurface portionsof the moon.GANYMEDE

Europa is predominantly a rockyworld with an ice-covered surfacethat is crisscrossed with cracksand low ridges.Few craters are evident. The ice appears to be the frozensurface of a great water oceanthat has broken up and refrozenmany times.EUROPA
Tidal forces may generate enoughheat to keep water in the liquidstate not too far beneath thesurface layer of ice.EUROPA

is a close twin our Moonwith about the same size anddensity.Io has active volcanoes on itssurface. Volcanoes emit hotrocky lava, sulfur and sulfurdioxide. The sulfur and sulfur dioxiderecondense in the cold andsnow down upon Io’ssurface.IO
Io is constantly resurfacingitself.IO

Moons of Saturn19 Moons and Massive Ring SystemTitan is most significant satellite and the only moon with asignificant atmosphereRing material size of ping-pong, tennis and basketballs.
Saturn’sTitanis about thesize of Jupiter’s Ganymedeand is about half ice andhalf rock.It is the only moon to havea substantial atmosphere. The atmospheric surfacepressure is 1.6 times that ofEarth.Io
Titan’s atmosphere iscomposed mostly ofmethane. Nitrogen andhydrocarbon compoundsare also present.Methane clouds composedof shroud the surface. Thesurface is probably coveredwith methane ice andperhaps methane oceans.Io
TethysTethys's icy surface is heavilycratered and contains crackscaused by faults in the ice. Thereis one enormous trench on Tethysabout 65 kilometers wide andextending from above the centerto the extreme left. It covers three-fourths of Tethys' circumference.
