Regan Tracy Period: 6 3/1/18 Mr. G Louisiana Salt Mine Disaster November 20 th , 1980, the company of Texaco drilled into Lake Peigneur with an oil rig. Based on a mathematical error, the drill missed it’s target and drilled into a salt mine. The 14 inch diameter hold caused water to flood the hole, filling the salt mine. As the salt dissolved, a whirlpool was formed, only growing in size. Luckily, the 55 miners that were mining got out safely, and no human lives were actually lost, although there were a few close calls. Afterwards, Texaco paid approximately $44.8 million in damages. The biological habitat of the lake changed as well, becoming a home to many new species that had not previously lived in the lake beforehand. The accident was a human and natural error. Drills tend to deviate when drilling, and in this case it caused an accidental puncture in the lake, which happened to be the roof of a salt mine. The pressure caused water to flow in, and salt dissolves in water. This caused the water to gain more surface area at an alarming speed. A whirlpool formed, and natural consequences

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
