Dew was taught that the only reason the South seceded from the Union was because they felt that their states rights were being taken away. As he grew older, Dew changed his mindset and realized that the cause of the Civil War was not because the South feared being striped of their rights, rather they did not want to lose their slaves. Years later the question of what started the civil war is still being asked. Many confederate advocates argued that the war was not based off of the Confederacy’s racism, like R.
