Rita Gunther McGrath ( @rgmcgrath ) is an associate professor at Columbia Business School and faculty director for Women in Leadership, a Columbia executive education program. A growing body of research is supporting what we have anecdotally believed for some time–losing executive women is expensive and can undermine a company’s competitive advantage. As one study from the University of Illinois at Chicago found, When compared to companies with a less diverse workforce (less than 20% female), companies with a highly diverse workforce (greater than 45% women) have significantly higher revenue, more customers, higher than average market share, and higher than average profitability. The McKinsey Global Institute further found that if every state in the U.S. matched states with the fastest rate of improvement toward gender parity, the entire country would benefit by an addition of $2.1 trillion in incremental GDP in 2025—10% higher than what was projected in a business-as-usual scenario. While the factors that cause women to leave the ranks as they reach a certain level in the hierarchy are complex and intractable, there are inexpensive practices that the C-Suite can adopt which can clear away at least some of the barriers to women’s advancement. These include: Enforce a “no interruption” rule at meetings. Research suggests that both men and women interrupt women more during meetings, stifling the free flow of ideas and limiting the innovative capacity of the group as a whole. This finding was the centerpiece of recommendations made by Adam Grant and Sheryl Sandberg about the “ dangers of speaking while female .” They described how Glen Mazzara, producer of the hit series “The Shield” found
