This course will expose the motivated business and technology-oriented student to key management theories, models and tools in strategy, finance, accounting, commercialization, marketing and sales. We will also explore the role and impact of leadership and culture in achieving business value through organizational effectiveness and capability. We will spend the majority of our time skill-building and learning about business through a combination of assigned readings, seminar lectures, guest lectures and case studies. Cases will be drawn from current technology companies and will provide an opportunity to apply newly learned skills to evaluate the external competitive environment, the projected business opportunity, the firm’s advantages and gaps and the identification of key business drivers. The course will culminate in student-led group presentations, with each group presenting the results of their business simulation project. Objectives: 1. Understand what comprises a business strategy 2. Gain knowledge on the “language” of business – financial statements – and learn to use them to analyze companies and inform a strategy 3. Learn how competitive advantage is gained through differentiation, operations, innovation and marketing 4. Apply knowledge through a team exercise using a realistic, competitive, multi-period computer- based business simulation TMP 120  :  Syllabus and Course Outline  :  Jill E. Feldman 1
