Casey RohweinDr. Roehrle AP Lang B20 November 2017 It is well know that slavery was at one time, the most heated topic of debate. A son of former slaves, Benjamin Banneker wrote to Thomas Jefferson to argue against slavery’s existence. In his letter, Banneker uses many different rhetorical strategies with powerful affects many different times to argue against slavery. In his first paragraph Banneker begins by asking Thomas Jefferson to remember living under the British Crown. He continues this thought by writing how the British reduced them into a State of Servitude. Banneker uses this allusion to Jefferson’s past to allow Jefferson to better understand the feelings of oppression slavery causes. Banneker then later uses personification in paragraph one writing, “hope and fortitude wore the aspect of inability to the conflict.”(7-8) Thisrhetorical device purposefully to make Jefferson not only remember those feelings of hope and fortitude but remind him how when they failed it was not something he could brush off because it was as he himself was wearing the inability of those feelings. He finishes the paragraph by then reminding Jefferson about how lucky he is for his current “freedom and tranquility.”(12)
