Casey Rohwein Dr. Roehrle AP Lang B 6 April 2018 Joliffe’s Charts Portia’s “Quality of Mercy” speech in Act IV, I, 190-212 Exigence: Shylock is demanding Justice in the form of basically killing Antonio. Portia wants to prevent this because Antonio is the best friend of her husband, Bassanio. Audience: The audience of this speech is Shylock. Portia is speaking directly to him in court. Purpose: Portia’s purpose when saying this speech was to ask and persuade Shylock to give Antonio mercy. Ethos: “It is enthroned in the hearts of kings.” (200) Portia is using the credibility of Kings to prove to Shylock what a good thing it is to show mercy. This can lead Shylock to think if he shows mercy he will be as great as a king. “It is an attribute to God himself.” (201) Portia takes it up a notch and is using the credibility of God himself. Again Portia uses a powerful figure, in this instance God, to show Shylock what a good thing mercy is. Again this can lead Shylock to strive to be like God. This use of credibility of God will also pull out a religious argument. Shylock may feel inclined to do it more because God does and does not want to let him down as a devout Jew. Pathos “We do pray for mercy,” (206) When Portia says this she is showing Shylock they are not arguing with being right or right, they are admitting he is right but asking for his compassion. The goal of this line to provoke some pity or any emotion similar out of Shylock. Logos: “It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.” (193) In this line Portia is just logically pointing out to Shylock that him giving mercy is a win-win situation so he should obviously do it. Portia tells Shylock that Antonio will be blessed by being granted mercy and therefore as a reward for giving mercy Shylock will also be blessed. Organization/Structure/Form: This speech is written in iambic pentameter. The purpose of this was allow Portia’s speech to flow freely. This is an important to go along with her confidence when acting as Balthazar which helps her win her case.
