Kayla Harris October 1, 2017 Sociology 1101 In sociology, social structure describes how human beings in a society interact with each other. Two sociologists that explored this topic further are Emile Durkheim and Ferdinand Tonnies. Emile Durkheim coined the terms Mechanical Solidarity and Organic Solidarity, and Ferdinand Tonnies coined the terms Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. Mechanical Solidarity describes small communities that have little to no diversity of labor, share the same norms and values, and perform the tasks. This typically goes hand in hand with Gemeinschaft which is an intimate community in which everyone knows everyone and depends on each other for basic needs. On the other hand, there is Organic Solidarity which describes larger communities in which everyone has their own agenda and there is a lot of diversity of labor. This is similar to Gesellschaft which is a large, urban community in which everyone performs to their self- interest. Based on these definitions, I believe that Atlanta, Georgia reflects the tenants
