Diversity and Health Assessments The challenges in building a health history in this increasingly diverse healthcare environment is something that we, as future advance practice nurses, need to be aware of and have the ability to navigate. With every passing year, the United States is becoming more and more diverse. The demographic changes that are anticipated over the next few decades will directly impact all facets of our society, including healthcare delivery (Betancourt, Green, & Carrillo, 2000). It is expected that people of color (African Americans, Hispanics, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and Alaskan Natives) will grow from a current 28 percent of the population, to over 40 percent of the population by the year 2030 (Betancourt, Green, & Carrillo, 2000). An example of the targeted questions I would ask this patient are as follows: 1. When did the anxiety start? 2. Is the anxiety constant or intermittent? 3. How often do you smoke “pot” and how much? How often do you drink alcohol and how much?
