MODULE 2 SHORT PAPER 2 Role of Accreditation in Ensuring Patient Safety Accreditation is the process by which an outside agency to the organization providing services evaluates that organization against a set of predetermined guidelines and publicly certifies the results (Joshi, Ransom, E., Nash, & Ransom, S., 2014). In 2002, the Joint Commission established its National Patient Safety Goals Program (NPSG). The first set of NPSGs came into effect on January 1, 2003, and was developed to help accredited organizations solve specific patient safety issues (The Joint Commission, 2017). Patient Safety Quality is defined in many ways. Healthcare organizations rely upon regulatory agencies such as the Joint Commission, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, then Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to identify outcomes that indicate quality and set benchmarks to demonstrate outcome achievements. These agencies provide guidance and direction to healthcare organizations to realize quality outcomes, patient safety, and cost-effectiveness. To demonstrate compliance with these directives, healthcare organizations identify methods to collect data that measure achievement of these efforts.
