Lyzette Flores Mrs.Tschirhart September 18,2017 Mary Oliver, the poet in “Crossing the Swamp” elucidates a stimulating yet a gloomy alliance with a swamp. Oliver demonstrates an interdependence of life through the swamp using imagery,metaphor and alliteration. Although this poem bespeaks the hardship in life, it shifts tone to optimistic proving there is always one more chance. Oliver starts off by the use of imagery improving to our understanding the skirmish towards life with “... the dark burred faintly belching bogs” too soft to support anything. Oliver uses the swamp as a symbol of affliction for a certain time in life. Continuing with the imagery “My bones knock together at the pale joints, trying for foothold…” we sense the speaker has challenges throughout his life.
