Cires 1 Lisdrey Cires Prof. Stone ENC 2102 October 29, 2016 America s intellectual Declaration of Independence “The American Scholar” a historic speech for Americans given in 1837 by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The speech was given to challenge the belief or philosophy of the old generation, with that, letting history be written by other “faulty” humans, direct our ideologies for the new generation, is essentially wrong. Emerson wanted the new generation to create their own ideologies and identities in an intellectual level. The idea behind this, is to have a generation of scholars that are innovators and free thinkers, who will improve technology, society and come up with answers on their own, and essentially living a self-directed life. Oliver Wendell Holmes described “The American Scholar” as our intellectual Declaration of Independence. I would agree with that analogy; he is saying that just like the Declaration of Independence, which stated the reasons why the North American colonies would seek independence, “The American Scholar” states why we should do the same with independence, but at an intellectual level for the American people. “What Does It Mean to Be Educated?
