Explain your definition of the “idea of India.” Use specific, supporting ideas and examples from the readings and lectures. Why is that the title of the book? What is he saying? There are plural ideas of India Can say it’s a mixture of success and failure-just give the ways Success in democracy, however failure in the social aspect and individual rights point of view. The “idea of India” is a collision of culture and politics Nehru’s idea of India and “Indianness” was layered and adjustable. It recognized other aspects. Every Indian has their own definition of the “idea of India” Succeed bc- Succeed because unlike all of the other nations that started out as a democracy, India was able to sustain a strong democracy, and is all inclusive of the people and the majority rule actually decides the future of the country, untrue in the US because of the electoral college for example. India is a successful democracy despite religion and other probs, most countries had other competing interests and their democracy fell, however India’s didn’t fall despite competing interests. Worlds largest democracy India didn’t want democracy to lead and leap into industrialization, like China. The Bombay Plan: There was further expansion in the textile and consumer industries in main cities like Bombay. Industries in India be systematically planned by the state Indian industrialists created it as a plan of economic development The Soviet Plan (Nehru): 1) Followed industrialization by the state 2) Followed const. democracy 3) Followed econ. And equitable social distribution **Formed to achieve social and economic equality.
