IntroductionIt has been estimated that in 2015, the video gaming market generated US$91.5 billion worldwide andthat it will continue to grow, with the revenue for 2016 estimated at US$100 billion. Although thesefigures reflect a rising market, many companies have been struggling, especially at adapting to this ever-growing and increasingly competitive market. In this assignment we decided to “shadow” Nintendo, a true pioneer in interactive entertainment.Nintendo is a manufacturer of hardware and software. The Japanese based company has had a pivotal roleto what we consider video gaming today. Having sold over 4.4 billion video games and 696 millionhardware units globally, Nintendo has undoubtedly established itself as a household name.Brief HistoryNintendo has an extremely rich history dating back to when it was founded in 1889. It began bymanufacturing and distributing handmade Japanese playing cards. Despite some setbacks they grew to bea well-established company in Japan through the early 1900s. In 1963, Nintendo began to explore otherareas of business including a taxi company, hotel chain and a food company. However, all of theseventures failed eventually and even playing cards sales began to drop. Nintendo began looking intoelectronic games and toys. Their first venture into video games was in 1970 with the “Beam Gun Series”,which they began exporting to the United States and Europe by 1974. In 1980, Nintendo launched thefirst handheld video game console, called Game & Watch, featuring only one game. A year later theyreleased the iconic game “Donkey-Kong”. In 1983, Nintendo released the “Family Computer” in Japan. Itwas released in 1985 in North America, now called the “Nintendo Entertainment System” (NES). Thesystem introduced the world to “Super Mario Brothers”, one of the best selling video games of all time. In1989, the “Game Boy” was released, which mixed the Game & Watch’ portability and the ability to swapgames that the NES had. The next big jump came in 1996 when Nintendo launched the “Nintendo 64”. In2004 the “Nintendo DS” was released, this was a huge innovation as it featured touch screen technology.Nintendo biggest success came in 2006 when they released the “Nintendo Wii”, which introduced awhole new style of interactive entertainment. A follow up to the Wii was released in 2012 called the “WiiU”, however it was not near to as successful as the Wii. Finally, two years later the “Nintendo 3DS” wasintroduced which was met with a good response. LogisticsInnovationNintendo has been at the center of numerous innovations regarding video games. Take the first handheldvideo game console for example which was made in 1980 and led to the creation of the Game Boy Colourin 1989. These two major innovations in the video game sector set up by Nintendo as a precursor to videogames and marked the beginning of a series of innovations which significantly affected the sector. These
