Linear Editing Linear Editing - Linear video editing is a video editing post-production process of selecting, arranging and modifying images and sound in a predetermined, ordered sequence. Regardless whether captured by a video camera, tapeless camcorder, recorded in a television studio on a video tape recorder (VTR) the content must be accessed sequentially. For the most part video editing software has replaced linear editing.

Linear Editing Linear editing always had two phases: Off-line editing, to figure out all creative decisions going from copy to copy, ruining image quality but making up an edit decision list (EDL). On-line linear editing, to go back to the original camera tapes for original image quality and with the help of a very expensive and highly technical computer assisted studio, the technicians reassembled the off-line edit, basically repeating the edit decision list.

Non - Linear Editing (non - destructive editing) A video editing method which enables direct access to any video frame in a digital video clip, without needing to play or scrub/shuttle through adjacent footage to reach it, as was necessary with historical video tape linear editing systems. It is the most natural approach when all assets are available as files on hard disks rather than recordings on reels or tapes

Computerized NLE The greatest advantage of the computerized NLE is that the old division between offline (creative) and online (technical) editing systems has largely disappeared.
