April 6 2018 LINB20 Chapter 10 Notes Multilingualism MULTILINGUAL SOCIETIES Different languages can be used for different purposes Asymmetrical Bilingualism: occurs when less powerful linguistic groups are expected to adopt the language of the powerful group in order to access education, government services, and jobs Multilingualism can occur due to population movements (immigration and displacement), drawing boundaries between countries to make them more linguistically distinct, and marriage (also known as exogamy ) DIGLOSSIA Occurs when two distinctly different language varieties co-exist in a speech community, acting as social registers, in the sense that the “high variety” is used for formal situations (with strangers, bosses, and teachers), while the “low variety” is used for more informal situations (with friends, family, and subordinates) The choice of which language to use is highly constrained by social contexts (domains) Usually arises from generations of
