March 16 2018 LINB20 Chapter 11 Notes Language Contact LINGUISTIC CONTACT Different types of isolation, whether it be physical, social, or linguistic, play a role in the formation and maintenance of distinct language varieties Linguistic contact occurs when speakers of a certain language or language variety meet speakers of a different language or language variety Dialect Leveling: occurs when regional features of the speech of a group of people converge towards a common norm over time BORROWING Codeswitching: occurs in instances where people alternate between two languages or “codes” in a single conversation “Borrowings”: words that are taken from one language or dialect, and are incorporated into another language, such that monolingual speakers of the borrowing language use it with new associations. Once the word is truly borrowed, it loses its associations with the original language, and adopts the new linguistic features of the borrowing language The types of words that are most likely to be borrowed from other languages follow this order: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs
