Dead Man Walking- Ethics Paper The issue I have selected is the issue of the death penalty. This death penalty is an ethical issue that sparks much debate around the world and the movie, ‘Dead Man Walking,’ really explores the issue through its story line and characters. The death penalty is an ethical issue because it involves the general ethical areas of punishment and whether it is right to deprive a human being of their life. It combines these two issues and the BBC sums it up well with the quote, ‘The question as to whether or not it is morally acceptable for the state to execute people, and if so under what circumstances, has been debated for centuries. The ethical problems involved include the general moral issues of punishment with the added problem of whether it is ever morally right to deprive a human being of life.’ 1 The definition of ethics is the moral principles that govern how a person behaves when performing an activity, and this definition applies to the death penalty as the problem at hand is deciding if someone should be killed for the outcome of their actions. The death penalty is the key ethical issue explored through the film ‘Dead Man Walking.’ The prisoner, Matthew Poncilate, is on death row and he is the one of the main characters of the film. The other main character is the Nunn, Sister Helen, and she is trying to help the prisoner become healed and off death row. She explores his mindset before and after the crime and finds out that he is not necessarily the monster that committed the awful crimes of murder and rape. The ethical
