Academic Research and the University Library Databases As a college student, you gain access to the university library website. Universities pay tons of money for access to digital databases . A database is a fancy way to say an organized collection of data. Why is this important? Well, when you write an academic research paper, you are expected to use academic research —scholarly books and articles written by experts in the field. You could access some of these articles via search engines such as Google, however, it is WAY easier and quicker to do so via the library databases. Go to the Stony Brook University library home page. Do you notice the blue search engine box? You can search for a topic via subject, author, keyword, title etc. You will want to limit your results or you will get thousands of entries: click on “full text” as you want to be able to access the entire article and/or print it out. “ Peer-reviewed ” refers to academic articles published in
