Amanda Balash 5.1 Section Review 1. Describe the importance of seaweeds in marine ecosystems? When seaweed dies, it decomposes. Then the nutrients and glucose inside of it disperse into the water. Many small organism use this food source such as plankton. Plankton are at the bottom of the food chain so basically every living organism depends on seaweed directly or indirectly. Also, many organisms live in seaweed and it is their environment. It provides shelter for marine organisms. 2. How are marine algae adapted for carrying out photosynthesis? Many species of green algae attach themselves to rocks on or near the ocean’s surface to make sure they get enough sunlight. This prevents them from being carried onto the shore by the waves and keeps them stable to photosynthesize. Brown algae has air bladders that keep it afloat and a holdfast which holds it to a rock in water so that it is able to photosynthesize. Red algae has the red pigment phycoerythrin and the blue pigment phycocy which allow it to photosynthesize with considerably less light.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
