THE SUI DYNASTY 2. THE TANG DYNASTY 3. THE SONG DYNASTY China is known for being one of the world’s richest historical countries. It has a cultural history which is long and mysterious spanning over a period of over 5,000 years. Over the more than 5,000 years of history, numerous dynasties were formed which ruled part or all of China at any period. There is even a period known as the Sixteen Kingdoms era where over a period of 135 years, territories in the north of China changed hands so many times and affected the population numbers so drastically that it was eventually taken over and unified in 439. This essay serves to highlight three of the most influential dynasties that can be found during China’s vast history and to show how they affected each other. The Sui Dynasty
The first of these dynasties is the Sui Dynasty which was one of the shortest major dynasties in China. It was founded initially in Northern China by a Northern General by the name of Yang Jian in 581 A.D. In 589 A.D. the Sui Dynasty, under the rule of Yang Jian, now known as Emperor Wendi, was able to defeat the Chen Dynasty in the Southern region and for the first time in over three centuries, China was unified. Emperor Wendi then, as a means of ensuring economic equality across the dynasty, went about reintroducing centralized governance and restoring of the Han Chinese system for civil service. He also, as a means of encouraging both agriculture and trade throughout the dynasty, went about building the Grand Canal which he thought would link both northern and southern China.
