ERIN ANDREWS V. MARRIOT INTERNATIONAL 2The parties to this high-profile celebrity case were; Erin Andrews (plaintiff), a FOX sports reporter and TV personality, Marriot International hotels and Michael Barrett (defendants). The primary issue at the center of this case was the invasion of Andrew’s privacy by a stalker while in the hotel room. It was misconduct on the part of the hotel to cooperate with the stalker, Michael Barrett, in shooting a video of Andrews naked in her room. The crime had an enormous impact on Andrews’ profession as a newscaster and also her privacy as reactions from the public intensified, following a viewership of the video by 16.7 million people. In 2008, Andrews was staying at Marriot at Vanderbilt University, on assignment as an ESPN sportscaster. Andrews’ legal team, led by Bruce Broillet, told the court that the hotel staff at Marriot disclosed to Michael Barrett, the perpetrator, the room Ms Andrews was occupying in the hotel and even allowed him to book the room adjacent to hers, in a glaring breach of her confidentiality. The revelation was made to Barrett days before she even arrived and all along she was in the dark about all this. She told the court that had she been aware of this scheme by the hotel management and the perpetrator, she would have taken up the matter with the police to avoid the damage that had been caused to her person and her profession. The hotel through their counsel, explained that they granted Barret’s request for a room
