What's the disease? diphtheria 1 Corynebacterium diphtheriae Diphtheriacausing strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae are altered by a bacterial virus (bacteriophage b) to express a toxin gene. This is called Virulence Conversion. The diphtheria toxin enters human cells, stops protein synthesis and kills them.
