NURS 6531: Primary Care of Adults Across the Lifespan Week One: Competencies of Advanced Nursing Practice The National Council of State Boards of Nursing defines an advanced practice nurse (APN) such as a nurse practitioner as an RN who has completed an accredited graduate-level nursing program holding a national certification in APRN role, and population-focused competencies (Competency and Credentialing Institute, 2017). In addition to comprehensively understanding and managing clinical conditions, knowledge of the Core Competencies will help prepare nurse practitioners to meet the demands of our continuously changing healthcare delivery system. Core Competencies assist in developing skill sets and programs to improve patient care contextualized to the needs of an individual, care setting, or institution (ACP Hospitalist and American College of Physicians, 2017). The purpose of this week’s discussion will help in analyzing the importance of the competencies that will guide clinical practice and the proficiency on technology and information literacy will be reflected. Technology and Information Literacy During the past years, the rapid adoption of health information technology (HIT) in the US has been very apparent, primarily driven by the more than $25 billion in incentives for Meaningful Use of HIT provided to date as a part of healthcare reform in the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act (Lyles & Sarkar, 2015).
