Choose one of the readings from page 119-149 and explain the argument. Make sure to clarify which reading passage you chose. Would you have argued the position differently? Why or why not? How is it argues? Could there be another way to argue the text? How did the author argue yet made sure not to be bias? The readings I have chosen is “Organ Sales Will Save Lives” by Joanna MacKay. In my view it is very powerful argument in health context. No, I would not have argued the position differentlybecause the position taken by Joanna is not considered to be inclined because she has written it in a way that her first paragraph was clear and arguable position consisting why people should orwant to donate organs in a clear way. This is an argumentative essay where writer has supported that the organ donation can save one’slife. A strong point she used in her first paragraph is “Government should not ban the sale of human organ; they should regulate it”. The point is supported by one main reason; it will save lives. Joanna has included all the appeals (i.e. logical, ethical and emotional) to persuade her audience on her argument regarding organ donation legalization in a country. She has started her essay in a very trustworthy and emotional way with various dependable researches and citations of the sources. Her way of persuading readers is very unique by directly and indirectly relating every point of her view with organ transplantation.

Unformatted text preview: Joanna has started her essay with various considerations, necessary background information with various counter arguments and their reasons. Her ending paragraph was concluded by asking question, “If legalized and regulated, the sale of human organs would save lives. Is it moral to sentence thousands to unnecessary deaths?” which was persuasive enough to make audience in favor of her essay. Any argument can be organized in two ways and they are; reasons to support your argument followed by opposing arguments and reason or opposing arguments. Since, writer has used reasons to support her argument followed by opposing arguments. Yes, there can be another way to argue the text. Author argued in a fair way making sure not to be bias. In seventh paragraph she has mentioned about the poor being exploited if the donation is legalized but still they are exploited in illegal donations. Also, she have written in the favor of not donating organs and that is shown by the line, “After selling a kidney, their state of living actually worsens. While the $1000 pays off only one debt, it is not enough to relieve the donor of the extreme poverty that placed him in debt in the first place.” So, in my view author argued in a fair way.
