INTRODUCTION A leader is one who influences others to attain goals. Leaders orchestrate change, set direction, and motivate people to overcome obstacles and move the organization toward its ideal future. Outstanding leaders combine good strategic substance and effective interpersonal processes to formulate and implement strategies that produce results and sustainable competitive advantage. They are the strategists who seize opportunities others overlook and also passionately concerned with all the small details, fundamental realities that can make the grandest of plans. Leaders serve people best when they help them develop their own initiative and good judgement, enable them to grow, and help them become better contributors. In leadership, there are two perspectives which are, what people want and what people need. According to James Kouzes and Barry Posner, the two well-known authors and consultants, there are five key behaviours of the best leaders. First, best leaders challenge the process. They challenge conventional beliefs and practices and create constructive change. Second, they inspire a shared vision. They appeal to people’s values and motivate them to care about an important mission. Third, best leaders enable others to act. They give people access to information and give them the power to perform their full potential. Fourth, best leaders model the way. They don’t just tell people what to do, they are living examples of the ideals they believe in. Fifth, best leaders also encourage the heart. They show appreciation, provide rewards, and use various approaches to motivate people in positive ways. One of the essential components to create a great leadership is by having a vision for the future. Vision is a mental image of a possible and desirable future state of the organization. It expresses the leader’s ambitions for the organization. A vision is necessary for effective leadership. A person or team can develop a vision for any job, work unit, or organization. The leader must be able to articulate the vision, clearly and often meanwhile other people throughout 2

the organization should understand the vision and be able to state it clearly themselves. Therefore, it is both leader and followers responsibilities to turn the vision into reality. Management and leadership are both vitally important. Leadership involves unique processes that are distinguishable from basic management processes. An alternative distinction is between supervisory and strategic leadership. Supervisory leadership is behaviour that provides guidance, support, and corrective feedback for day-to-day activities while strategic leadership gives purpose and meaning to organizations, envisioning and creating a positive future.
