The Declaration of Independence (-docs/declaration) was issued on July 4, 1776. This document continues to inspire people to fight for freedom and equality. The Declaration of Independence expressed the founding ideals of the United States, and served to explain to foreign nations why the 13 colonies decided to sever their political connections from Great Britain. The colonists had become frustrated with the British government, who attempted to settle old war debt by extracting money via imposed taxes to the US colonies. Taxes including the Sugar Tax, Stamp Tax, and Tea Tax became motivators for the colonies to break from British rule. Thomas Jefferson drafted the “Declaration of Independence” with input people like John Adams and George Mason. All the contributing colonists were inspired by many sources including English philosopher John Locke’s “Two Treatises on Government”from 1689, stating: “humans are by nature free, equal, and independent”.
