Social Policy Decision Paper MADD is known as Mothers against Drunk Driving. Candace Lightner was the founder of this organization that started on May of 1980 in California. Her personal experiences with her family have led her to this. The first incident happen when her daughter Serena was 18 months old and they car was rear-ended by a drunk driver. Six years later, her son Travis was run over by a driver who was impaired by tranquilizer and who did not have a license to drive. According to David Hansen, the final draw for Candace was when she lost her 13-year-old daughter Cari, who was struck by a drunk driver while she was walking to church. These experiences have led Candace to being an active advocate in a fight to end drunk driving violence in the United States. The ultimate goal of this organization is to reduce drunk driving fatalities by prevention strategies such as educating the community. Drunk driving is a social problem in the community because it is one’s behavior pattern that can affect others. When individuals get hurt because of this problem, it should be a primary concern for the public. However, the beginning years of this organization had challenges to overcome with the society, as well as the government. According to David J. Hanson, “before Candy Lighter’s crusade, intoxication, including drunken driving, was not taken seriously.” Many states did not have strict laws that pose
