EMPATHY, PROBING AND SUMMARIZING2Empathy, Probing and Summarizing.Empathy is the ability of a person to perceive, share and understand what another person canfeel. It is also considered as a feeling of affective participation of one person when another isaffected. (Richaud, M, 2017). The American sociologist Jeremy Rifkin states that empathy is aunique concept, referring to the ability, both cognitive and affective, of the individual where hecan put himself in the emotional situation of another person. (Rifkin, J; 2010).The role of empathy in the counseling relationship. In counseling, empathy expresses presence; and being empathetic implies knowing how tolisten, paying attention to each expression, verbal or not, of the individual present in atherapeutic session, understanding and understanding what he / she is saying. But it goes beyondthe simple act of listening, attending and understanding. If an advisor is not able to understandthe emotions expressed by his client, to the point of identifying his origin, he will not be able toclose the empathic circle. At the same time, knowing how to listen is not limited to focusingattention on the client, but the counselor must be able to observe, interpret and synchronize allthe nonverbal language of the individual with what he says.In addition to presence, empathy facilitates communication and problem solving. At this pointwe must be aware that it is not enough to understand and understand what the individual isexpressing, or to maintain an active dialogue. A counselor must know how to listen withoutmaking judgments, giving criteria or advising a client; Be assertive with each intervention youmake. Be physically and mentally present for the individual. Advising and helping someonerequires full attention and a certain level of "intensity of presence" (Egan, G. 2014).
