Chapter 23 Summary Utilitarianism: ultimate principle of morality is “strive to produce as much overall happiness as possible.” o Pleasure and freedom from pain are the only things desirable as ends; and that all desirable things are desirable either for pleasure inherent in themselves or as means to the promotion of pleasure and the prevention of pain. o Some kinds of pleasure are ore desirable and more valuable than others. The estimation of pleasure shouldn’t depend on quantity alone. What makes one pleasure better? “Of two pleasures, if there be one to which all or almost all who have experience of both give a decided preference, irrespective of any feeling of moral obligation to prefer it, that is the most desirable pleasure.” It is easier for an animal whose capacities for enjoyment are low to be fully satisfied, but a man, whose capacities are much larger can learn to bear with imperfections and they will not make him envy the being whose is unconscious of the imperfections. “It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied.” “Better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied.
