World wide depression and add to that the fact that 3 different countries were seeking to establish empires. Japan- Emperor Hirohito head was most alarming in 1930s becaue they directly impacted pacific Starting in the late 1920s and early 1930s japan had a plan to build on empire called the greatere southeast asian co prosperity sphere Japanese said we are modeling the U.S. Roosevelt corollary because we want friendly nations in asia just like us wanted friendly states in u.s. Japanese were the first to act aggressively.In 1931 japanese invadeManchuria 1931bc they stage some fake incident and rename it. (the last emperor movie). By having a chinese emperor in japanese colony that is how they got aroung the invaded part. So real question what was the league of nationsgoing to do? Set up after WWI. Ironically part of Woodrow wilsons dream to make world safe frm democracy and somehow sat down as a group there was someway to legally abolish war. U.S. did not join this. They were not all that interested in making world safe for democracy whent ehy sent there own troops. The league of nations had no authority except to have countries sign a promise not to go to war. So this is the first time they are tested bc japan is part of league ofnaitons and they took Manchuria. So what do they do. Send a group to china and japan ot see what happened. They said japan was wrong to do this and that was it. In the U.S. with the Russian rising in the 1930s there is a movement to prevent anything from WWI to happen again in the U.S. 1935-1939 there was a series of the neutrality actsthe harshest of the acts said:1.no armed sales to either party in a conflict. (even the innocent)2.no sale of anything that could be made into a weapon3.no U.S. citizens on ships owned by countries of war (lusitania like WWI)4.no loans to countries at wardidnt take into account that aggressive acts could affect people unfairly picked on.
