Kosovo’s independence Kosovo self-declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, following the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 2006. Having said this, prior to this date, Kosovo had always been separate from Serbia from and ethnic and religious point of view. In fact when the region had come under the control of the Ottoman Empire (1455) the Kosovar Muslim population had continued to live in their region relatively peacefully. The same can definitely not be said for the mostly Orthodox Serbian population, who fled the region upon arrival of the Ottomans. After the end of Ottoman rule, Kosovo became a part of Yugoslavia and was granted the status of autonomous region/province after WW2. Kosovo was formed in special circumstances, as a US Secretary of State said : “ we've been very clear that Kosovo is a “sui generi” and that that is because of the special circumstances out of which the breakup of Yugoslavia came.”. These special circumstances were characterized by oppressive actions on the part of Serbian forces led by Milosevich against Kosovar Albanian people, which led to NATO intervention in the area and withdrawal Of “Yugoslavian” troops (at this point, 1999, Yugoslavia was basically Serbia and Montenegro. The Yugoslavian wars came to be because of ethnic based territorial disputes that anticipated the predicted dissolution of Yugoslavia. The main conflicts in this war were the Croatian, Bosnian and Kosovar wars, and also the conflict between Albania and Macedonia regarding Albanian minorities in the state of Macedonia. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
