AHEAD Board of Directors Meeting Minutes October 25-26, 2010 Chicago, Illinois Present: Katheryne Staeger-Wilson KSW, Jean Ashmore JA, Michael Johnson MJ, Stephan Hamlin-Smith SHS, Mary Lee Vance MLV, Bea Awoniyi BA, Scott Lissner SL, Kathy McGillivray KM, Karen Saracusa KS, Jose Soto JS, Scott Bay SB, Tom Thompson TT The Board formally came to order at 8:30 a.m. on October 25. A summary of motions and discussion follows: Welcome and Housekeeping JA welcomed everyone and went through some general housekeeping. The July, 2010 meeting minutes were approved. Board members submitted conflict of interest forms. Scott Lissner agreed to be parliamentarian for the next year. Students with Intellectual Disabilities (SWID) TT presented an outline for a possible “white paper” on principles for addressing programs related to SWID and requested Board feedback. Some discussion points were: SWID have been and continue to access institutions with open admissions. Some schools have hands-on vocational training programs which sometimes involve more technical and academic skills than people foresee. We need to include some positive examples of programs which are working in the “white paper.” What Vehicles can we effectively use to acknowledge diverse opinions? There is a fear of these students getting fired, once they obtain employment. We should include questions DS professionals should be asking their administration?

Information should be disseminated to the affiliates. We need to identify our role in the process. SL moved that a subgroup of the Board work on a leadership/position statement regarding students with intellectual disabilities in postsecondary education and that a preliminary notification be sent to our members letting them know we are doing so. MLV seconded the motion. Motion passed. The work group consists of TT, MLV, and SL and is being led by TT. It was moved and seconded that the Board go into executive session at 9:35 a.m. Motion passed. It was moved and seconded that the Board leave executive session at 9:40 a.m. Motion passed. AHEAD Mentoring Program KS summarized work on the mentoring program. She requested Board feedback. Some discussion points were: Why can’t people choose their mentees? We should try to capture the areas of strength of potential mentors. The mentor should take on a more active role to try to recruit mentees. It was agreed that the AHEAD staff will develop a database on those interested in being mentors or mentees. Mike Shuttic and Mike Johnson will work with Karen on this project. Board Liaison Reports Government Relations and Public Policy: JS reported as follows: 1) Meeting - A delegation from the GP, including Jo Anne Simon, attended the NCD Disability Summit.
