79 th Session June 10-16, 2018 Catawba College American Legion Auxiliary Founded in 1919, the American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest women's patriotic service organization. The American Legion Auxiliary’s mission is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. For God and country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security . ALA Department of North Carolina The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of North Carolina, Inc. is a civilian patriotic organization of women that supports the mission of the American Legion. Membership shall be limited to mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, great grand-daughters and grandmothers of members of The American Legion and to the same relationships of all men and women who served in the armed forces of the United States during designated period of conflicts. (See the ALA North Carolina website for specifics.) Tar Heel Girls State American Legion Auxiliary Tar Heel Girls State originated in 1940 by the ALA to provide an opportunity to study and practice citizenship in a democracy. For over fifty years, it has developed within several thousand young leaders, a deeper sense of their responsibilities as citizens and serves as a practical source of instruction in the structure and operation of state and local governments. What Is Tar Heel Girls State? Tar Heel Girls State is the longest running Girls State program in the country. Our prestigious program teaches 250 of the top rising seniors is our state each summer about the working government of our state. The citizens spend a week creating their city government and a state government, political parties including platforms for each party. They elect their officials, write and debate bills, create working governments and attend many workshops pertaining to college applications, writing a resume, college life expectations, and many other topics that will help them in the coming year . Programs Objectives TO IMPROVE CITIZENSHIP FOR PRESENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS OF TAR HEELS. BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE STRUCTURE OF NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNMENT AND POLITICAL PROCESS TO DEVELOP CIVIC LEADERSHIP AND PRIDE IN AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP TO INSTILL IN THE CITIZENS OF TAR HEEL GIRLS STATE AN APPRECIATION FOR AMERICAN TRADITIONS AND BELIEF IN THE UNITED STATES TO DEVELOP A SENSE OF INDIVIDUAL OBLIGATION TO THEIR COMMUNITY, STATE AND NATION TO INSURE THE PRINCIPLES OF JUSTICE, FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY WILL CONTINUE FOR POSPERITY
