BACKGROUND My friend is Shameel Patel, he is a westernized Indian that still holds to many of the cultures from his home country. He started out as just my chiropractor, and has become a very close friend over the past several years. He has been there for the birth of both my two year old and my two week old, and I was there when his baby was born. It is easy to see that we are more than just acquaintances. He currently does live in the same town that I live but does travel back to India four or five times a year for a couple weeks at a time. His understanding of Jesus and the gospel is what I like to call a head knowledge. He knows who Jesus was but does not see or believe in Him as his savior. He is one that believes that his good works will get him to heaven, and that because he does so much good that he his sins will be forgiven. He knows how I believe and where my heart is, we have had a number of occasions where I have had the opportunity to share the gospel with him. Although He will talk to me about Jesus and the gospel, every time that I move the conversation deeper and toward trying to change his mind he redirects the conversation . He is a very private person when it comes to his personal life, especially when his wife and other family are around. Elements of Communication Communication with Shameel is not an issue as he is very westernized. We always talk freely with each other. As a matter of a fact I was talking with him today about Christianity and Hinduism. I am always respectful especially when it comes to conversations about religion I always keep 1 Peter 3:15 in mind when taking about religion with my friend. Although it is easy to communicate with him at times it is difficult when it comes to religion simply because of the major differences in our beliefs.

Cultural systems The first cultural system that must be considered in my conversation with Shameel is the family system. In our culture we have primarily a nuclear family system. Our homes consist of parents and children in the home with the children moving out when they grow up. In his culture they have a kinship family system where there is likely to be three to four generations living in one home. Everything that they do is with each other. Shameel has his Parents and his brothers family living in one home with him. The one reason that I could see this needing to be a consideration is when it comes to demonstrating what our love for God is supposed to be. In his culture there is no love greater that that for his family. It is hard to explain to him that our love for Christ should surpass the love for even our spouse. Saying this, using examples of the love that he shares with his family as examples of Christs love could be a powerful tool. For example, I could tell him that Christs love for us surpasses the love that his parents have for him.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
