Activity and Exercise Chapter 44 K&E’s Body movement – Normal movement – result of an intact musculoskeletal system, an intact nervous system, and intact inner ear structures responsible for equilibrium Requires coordinated muscle activity and neurologic integration 4 basic elements o Body alignment (posture) – person maintains balance as long as the line of gravity passes through the center of gravity and the base of support o Joint mobility – functional units of the musculoskeletal system, muscles are categorized according to type of joint movement they produce on contraction: Flexors Extensors Internal rotators External rotators Range of Motion – maximum movement possible for a specific joint, active = pt does ROM, passive = another person does ROM
