Stages of Interpersonal Stages of Interpersonal Relationships Relationships Relational development is the movement of a relationship from one stage to another, either toward or away from greater intimacy. The stage we are in affects our interpersonal communication and our interpersonal communication is the tool we use to move ourselves from stage to stage. Outsiders usually can tell what stage a relationship is in by observing the interpersonal communication

Relational Escalation Relational Escalation Relational escalation is the movement of a relationship toward greater intimacy. Movement from one stage to another represents an increase in the amount of intimacy between two people. Pre-interaction Awareness you observe someone or even talk to others about him or her without having any direct interaction. From this observation you form an initial impression and it will determine if you are going to move to another stage or not.

Acquaintance there are two sub-stages in the acquaintance stage: Introductions and Casual Banter. Introduction – tell each other names and basic demographic information. Once we have made his or her acquaintance, we can interact without having to introduce ourselves again. There are times when attempts at introductions are declined, and the other person never joins you on the elevator to the acquaintance floor.
