Bacon 1 Brittney Bacon Mrs. Hair English 102 Y13 17 September 2017 Preach or Protest Letter from Birmingham Jail, was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while King was in jail for parading without a permit. The purpose of King’s letter was to explain why he acted the way he did, how his actions should be justified and to speak up for what he believed in, equality. This letter was written to the eight religious leaders of Alabama. Martin Luther King Jr. used various types of rhetoric to prove his point in his letter and to make it a successful piece. Martin Luther King Jr. used ethos in his letter to prove a point to the clergymen. He also used it to attack the words the clergymen said in the original letter to King. To get his point across he brought Jesus into the issue. King was called an “extremist” for the way he acted. Religion was a major part in society back in the 1900’s. King made the claim that Jesus was an extremist as well; “Was not Jesus an extremist for love?” (444) King made this claim to show that being an extremist is not as bad as the clergymen made it seem and that it was not an insult to him like they had intended. Jesus is very high in authority which is why the speaker brought it to attention. King made this point knowing the clergymen would not disagree when it comes to religion.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
