Bacon 1 Brittney Bacon English 102 Y04 Mrs. Hair 11 October 2017 Justice for All Women’s roles and freedom caused a lot of conflict in not only the United States, but all over the world especially in the court systems. “Trifles”, written in 1916, caused various different viewpoints of the law and how women were involved. The verdict of the murder case of Mr. Wright would have had a very different outcome if women were allowed to participate in the court system and become members of the jury. Susan Glaspell’s, “Trifles”, the idea of gender roles is the main concern.Trifles, was written and based off of a real life event that took interest of Glaspell, due to the roles of women in the court systems in the early 1900’s and how the Margaret Hossack was charged for a crime, by a jury of her peers. Trifles, argues legal viewpoints involving women and unjust, unfair women’s roles in the early 1900’s in the court systems. The court case in “Trifles” would have been significantly different if women’s roles in society were fair in the early 1900’s.Glaspell wrote “Trifles”, after a life altering experience, which occurred sixteen years before Trifles was written. On December 2, 1900 a murder occurred in Indianola, Iowa (New Directions in Critical Inquiry). A sixty year old man was brutally murdered by his wife while he was asleep at their residence. Margaret Hossack, his wife, was accused and charged for the death of her husband, and sentenced to a life sentence of hard labor in Iowa’s state penitentiary. Women had no rights when it came to law. Bacon 2 American Equal Rights Association was founded.(Chronology 553) However, this did not change women’s rights and their participation in major events such as jury duty. Eventually in 1920, the nineteenth amendment was added to the US constitution which finally gave women the right to vote. This changed society drastically, because in order to participate in a jury trial, you must be allowed to vote in the United States. They were seen as their husband’s property and house keepers. Glaspell took this incident as an opportunity to show the case and how gender played a vital role in the outcome of the case.
