Physical growth - Quantitative  increase in size or body mass.  Physical maturation - Qualitative  advance in biological makeup; cell, organ of system  advancement in biochemical composition.  Aging-  Changes that occur with the passage of time, Leading to loss of adaptability or  full function. More fat mass with physical growth.  Characteristics of Motor Development - Involves change in movement behavior. A  continuous process of change in functional capacity. Amount of change may vary at dif- ferent points in the life span. It is sequential, age- related, continuous, one step leads to  the next, development is related to but NOT dependent on age. Development can be  faster or slower at different times. Rate of development is different for individuals.  De- velopment the FASTEST during 1st year of life.  A Paradox in Development Universality:  Individuals in a species shows great similarity in development.
