Ben Kastner 11/28/2017 Identifying and Formulating an Ill-structured problem- Gun Safety Gun safety and gun regulation has been a problem not only in our country but worldwide recently because of increasing violence and social conflicts and gun related crime. This issue can be broken down into three major points being unsafe weapon mechanisms, poor distribution of firearms, and lack of gun safety knowledge. In total 31,076 people died in the year of 2010 because of gun related incidents, with a third of these being due to homicide and the other two thirds being primarily suicide. During this year 606 people were killed because of unintentional fire-arm accidents, and it has been estimated that over 30% of these deaths could have been prevented if the gun had just a few more safety precautions added [3]. A survey that was conducted in 2015 called the National Firearms Survey and it showed that only 57% of the gun owners surveyed had ever received formal training on protection, while a meniscal 14% of people living with them had every taken a gun safety class [4]. Another haunting statistic related to guns being poorly distributed to unfit candidates is that since the year 1982 there has been 62 mass shootings in our country [5]. A mass shooting is classified as a single incident where a shooter kills 4 or more people not including himself, so with that knowledge we can now see that upwards of 250 people have been killed in only 62 instances of gun violence because of one person’s poor mistake with a firearm [6]. This data leads me to my conclusion that to improve gun safety in our country as engineers we need to develop new methods for these people to better understand how to safely use a firearm and ensure that it is safe for them to pull the trigger. To fully understand how to develop a solution for this problem I need to do background research on the topic of gun safety to better understand both how we can improve the guns

design to make it safer and how we can inform and protect anyone involved with firearms. When researching how guns are made I will need to find out what precautions are used when creating these weapons to make them more user friendly. Table 1-Gun Safety Decomposition Decision Graph During the problem solving process of this topic I mapped out three main factors and branched each of them out to figure out ways to solve them. Under the manufacturing wing I listed developing better safety mechanisms, which are what keeps the gun from firing, and to modernize weaponry that has been on the market for many years and make sure their safety standards are up to date. In the branch related with distribution I brainstormed a process to

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
