ASTRO 81 - Assignment #8 due Friday of Week #10 before noon To get full credit for these problems you need to show all your work. Longer problems with more sub-parts are worth more points. 1. The Chandrasekhar mass is the maximum mass which can be supported by fully rel- ativistic degenerate electrons. We can derive an approximate value for this as follows: Start with the equation for the pressure of a relativistic degenerate gas (given near the end of page 239 in the text). Set this pressure equal to the star’s central pressure GM 2 /R 4 , and assume the central density ρ c is twice the average density. Show that the radius cancels out, and solve for the mass M. How large is this mass in solar units? (Because of some oversimplifications in this derivation, it doesn’t yield exactly the right value for the Chandraeskhar mass, but it does demonstrate the basic result: there is a unique maximum mass which can be supported by relativistic electrons, and any mass higher than that cannot be supported by degeneracy!)

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
