ASTRO 81 - Assignment #6 due Friday of Week #7 before noon To get full credit for these problems you need to show all your work. Longer problems with more sub-parts are worth more points. 1. The absorption spectra of four stars exhibit the following characteristics. What are the appropriate spectral types? (a) The strongest lines are those of ionized helium. (b) The strongest features are titanium oxide bands. (c) The hydrogen Balmer lines are very strong, and some lines of ionized metals are present. (d) There are moderately strong hydrogen lines, and lines of neural and ionized metals are seen, but the Ca II, H, and K lines are strongest in the spectrum. 2. The Sun, a G2 main-sequence star, has a mass of 2 . 0 × 10 30 kg and a radius of 7 . 0 × 10 8 m. In comparison, Sirius (A1 MS star) and Betelgeuse (M2 supergiant) have masses of 2.2 M and 10 M and a radius of 1.6 R and 1000 R , respectively. Calculate the average density of the Sun, Sirius, and Betelgeuse.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
