Week 6.docx - Discuss how you would configure your Linux...

This preview shows 1 out of 2 pages.

Discuss how you would configure your Linux distribution to perform name resolution using DNS. Domain Name Service (DNS) is the means for computers to associate ip addresses with text names. This is used more commonly than some may expect. For example any website you have ever visited is comprised of DNS servers. Google.com. is comprised of three domains; Google, .com, and the period that follows (root). Linux is no different than any other Operating system as it also uses DNS to relate addresses with names. According to Linuxhomenetworking.com Linux uses BIND (Berkley Internet Name Domain Project) which is a group the maintains DNS software that runs in Linux ("Quick HOWTO : Ch18 : Configuring DNS - Linux Home Networking", 2012). Linux machines do not manage or store DNS data at all. Linux is configured to retrieve DNS data from a server or authoritative server. To resolve DNS in linux the following commands are available in Linux according to Cyberciti.biz: Host: Host is a simple command that can be used for DNS lookups by converting names to IP or IP to names. You can type host -t TYPE example.com or host -t a example.com to display the ip address associated with this DNS. Host houses many uses to include TTY, reverse IP lookup, IPv6 query, find SOA record, find mail server etc. ("Linux / UNIX: DNS Lookup Command - nixCraft", 2018).

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
